About AVM

The "Atlantic-Veteran's Memorial Boxing Clubs, Inc." was developed from "Two" Boxing Clubs : the "Veteran's Memorial Boxing Club"
established by Ed Murphy in 1969 to 1989 in Port Jefferson Station serving the North Shore & Eastern Suffolk County for 20 years. It was
developed as a "Year round" Youth Program along with the seasonal "Veteran's Memorial Football League" with over 52 teams and 2000 kids a year for 20 years.

In 1978, He helped a friend, Mr. Dan Howell, start his gym, "The Atlantic Boxing Club, Inc."  by allowing him to use the gym in Port
Jefferson until he found a suitable building in his area of Mastic-Shirley & Moriches. A coach helped draw up his Town Grant Proposal and they received money to pay for the Rent. Twenty years later, Ed Murphy's son, Mike,
began coaching again at the Atlantic Boxing Club and re-established the Veteran's Memorial Boxing Club using their gym. Eventually, in the year 2000, Mike Murphy was given the reigns of Both Clubs and they began turning out Local, Long Island, New York Golden Gloves, Empire State Games* "Long Island Champions & New York State Champions each year as well as
North-East United States & NATIONAL "Champions" - more than any other club in Long Island HISTORY!

We are the original "Grass-Roots","ALL -VOLUNTEER", "Year-round" Youth Community Program "BOXING CLUB" that is now struggling to keep it's doors open after 45 years since becoming a victim of losing our municipal funding due to their "balancing the budget"!

We are now utilizing our "501(3)c Charitable Status" to solicit donations to keep our memberships costs low enough for the "At Risk" kids to afford us. (They seem to be the one's who need us the most)  These are the same kids that would've been lured into the growing "Street Gangs"! A major problem on Long Island today as well as across the United States!

Though, not every person that comes through our door will become a Golden Gloves Champion, National or World Champion, but, they will come out a better person, more disciplined, self confident, more respect for others and themselves, for their bodies & health, and become worthwhile citizens of Society. We are a Non-Profit, All-Volunteer, Drug & Smoke Free, Year round Youth program dedicated to keep kids "off the streets" & "out of trouble" and away from the lure of "Street Gangs" through the most disciplined Sport of "Amateur Boxing"!

Just through the combination of the two Boxing Clubs the development of Today's "Top Professional Boxers" on Long Island including :

"Joe Smith Jr.", "Cletus "the Hebrew Hammer" Seldin", "Le'Shawn "Lightning" Rodriquez" dominating today.

Since 1969 Atlantic Veterans Memorial Boxing Gym has been the most successful Boxing Gym in Long Island History. With over 90 Champions born through our programs which are lead by the President and Head Trainer Michael Murphy.

We also offer training for adults either for fitness and weight loss or for the goal of becoming an Amateur or Pro Boxer.
